Why you should be experimenting with shopping search and who should do it?
In the early stages of online shopping consumers mainly purchased hard goods such a computers, electronics, consequentially the demographic of the "typical" online shopper was reflective of this. In 2003 they were 37, 55% male, 40% middle income and 38% were from the upper education level - more importantly only 20% had broadband at home! Now categories like clothing and home & garden (soft goods) are seeing the biggest growth.
By 2011, we in the UK will spend €10 million on clothes alone! Household goods have seen a 67% increase over the last 3 years. Consequentially the "typical" online buyer is becoming more like the "typical" offline buyer - more female and from broader socio economic classes. Most importantly 71% have broadband at home.
The moral of this story is everyone should experiment with shopping search no matter what you sell; the important thing is to ensure your products are on the right shopping engine as they have their own strengths and weaknesses.
